Belgium Ice Cream Hawker Stall

It was a very hot yesterday. I was sweating like mad. Happened to be at the Golden Mile Hawker Centre area, so went to try the famous Belgium Ice Cream. There were a lot of people lining up when I was there. Occasionally, you can feel that someone is taking photo outside the stall (Yes, I was one of them.)

The "ang mo" was no where to be seen (not that I am there to see him anyway), instead an middle age auntie and uncle was tending the stall. The stall is not your usual hawker stall. It was renovated very nicely and even has an computerised touch screen cashier (Cool hor?).

Their ice cream looked quite decent. One scoop cost $1.80 and two scoop cost $3. I asked if I can have two scoop of different flavour ice cream. The uncle answered quite friendly:"ok, charge you $3 lah. " (Isn't 2 scoops cost $3? Don't understand what he meant. )

Anyway, I asked for Green Tea and Chocolate. The strange thing is that he served 4 scopes of Ice Cream instead of 2. I wondered if it was due to the small ice cream scoops that he had to serve 2 scoops as one instead. The presentation is quite disappointing. I was hopping to see paper cup or something, instead it was the polyester foam bowl...

Green Tea was very mild and the flavour can be easily missed. There was bit of ice in the ice cream which makes it quite amature. The chocolate flavoured one was good though. It was very thick and creamy. Overall, I would give them 3 stars, partly due to the hot and dry weather yesterday. The cooling sensation deserves an extra star .

Besides ice cream, the shop also sells waffles with chocolate dip - $1.80 and fondue. The chocolate dip was also served in polyester foam cup too. Duh...

Verdict - Can try if you are curious

Daa Dah ! Lychee Martini Cake ***

Look very common isn't it? It look like strawberries cake or something.

It is pale pink in colour and layered with fresh cream and lychee bits. The lychee bits have been soaked in vermouth (Not sure if I spell it correctly.) The alcohol doesn't taste too strong and in fact is very mild only. I love the lychee flavour, which make the cake taste very light and refreshing. It is just nice, not too sweet. After eating, it left a very mild lychee flavour in your mouth.

I am giving it 3 stars for its uniqueness, but I think it can be further refined. For example, there can be more lychee bits in the cake. I am sure for $35 dollars they can certainly put more instead of this much. The lychee flavour (maybe and the alcohol) can be stronger by a little more. I would also improve the cake texture and presentation. The cake is a bit mushy and they left the crust of the cake intact. I thought most of the patissier would cut them away. It is not very pleasant to see the skin of the cake on the sliver tray. The design should be classier.

In fact, I don't just comment for the sake of commenting. I do know how to bake cake and make gateau. Maybe next year, I shall make one for myself. It will certainly not cost more than 35 dollars. :)

Verdict- Can try as it is unique but not strongly recommended.

感动

Seems like yesterday that I remember I was only 20 years old and suddenly 4 years have passed. What have I achieved during these 4 years? Hmmm... (getting disappointed...)

I was quite surprise when I received a lot well wishes from my friends. Some of them are those whom I seldom keep in touched with, but they still remembered my birthday. Even my busy colleagues manage to spare some time to wish me Happy Birthday!!! I am really very touched. I never thought they would do that. This make me feel very guilty. Especially, I was quite moody and easily irritated for the past week.

Crap... My colleagues told me that Pine Garden is more famous for their Cheese Cake. Argggggh...

Lost in Ang Mo Kio - In search of the Lychee Martini cake

I decided last night that I want to have lychee cake for my birthday as I love lychee! I did a search on the net to see whether there are any shops selling them. Lychee might not be a popular choice for cake fillings, but surprisingly there are 2 shops in Singapore selling lychee cakes. They are Bread Talk's Lychee Little and Pine garden's Lychee Martini Cake.

As there are more people recommending Pine Garden's lychee martini cake and it was even featured in ST's Urban, so I decided to give it a try. According to the Urban's article, Pine Garden is a neighbourhood cake shop that is located at Ang Mo Kio Ave 10. I have no idea where is the place, so early in the morning I had called them up to ask for directions. They are located at Blk 529, Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, #01-2369.

I was told to take bus 88 and to alight at the fourth bus stop. Hmm, bus 88, an auspicious start.

As directed, I got off at the fourth bus stop. However, Blk 529 was no where to be seen... If there are any HDB or LTA officers reading this, please simplify the roads and streets of Ang Mo Kio!!! Goodness, besides naming the roads with confusing avenue numbers, they have additional street number what and what. The signs were so useless and I was so lost...

Called back again to ask for directions. They asked if I would buy a lot from them, before directing me on the right track. Am thinking to myself that the cake better worth all these trouble. The only plus point of getting lost was finding a Singapore Pool store. I thus stopped to buy some Toto for tomorrow's mooncake 5 million draw. This might be a blessing in disguise. Hee Hee.

After 15 mins of walking, I finally found the shop. To my horror, it looked very neighbourhood. I mean I expected it to be neighbourhood, but not so ancient looking loh. I started to worry that the cake might not taste nice. Urban's recommendation should not be so bad, or is it? Honestly, there were a lot of customers buying mooncakes when I was there. If their products were bad, it would not have attracted so many people, isn't it... Well, I reckon I wasn't going to walk off without buying anything, so I decided to take a risk.

The cake look very "normal". It frankly speaking doesn't look like it cost $35 dollars. However, the packaging is nice though... Look classy.

Sneak preview of the cake. Yes, below is the lengendary Lychee Martini Cake, which cost $35 dollars per kg. Instead of using lychee as decoration, they used strawberries instead. I wonder why? (Will post later to comment on the taste. Stay tune. )

For those who wish to go there, you might want to know that it is directly opp Blk 451 and is near the Cheng San Market. :) You can call them as well to ask for directions, they, although busy (there are always second line ringing when I called them) erm... still quite friendly.

Geylang Serai - Selamat Hari Raya

As it was taken in the day, there are no lights yet.

The shiny shiny dome of the mosque-like decoration shimmers under the sunlight.

Such foodstalls are a common sight along the street.

100 years ago, who would have thought that Temasek, the then-fishing village would evolve into this big Cosmpolitan city?

Yes, if you noticed, the decoration used Selamat Hari Raya as greeting instead of Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri. In that case, have the organiser have made a mistake? Well, I checked the Wikis, while Hari Raya Aidilfitri is the official greeting, Selamat Hari Raya is more commonly used by Malaysia and Singapore's Muslim, so technically they are not wrong either... Maybe there is no wrong or right, it is a matter of preference...

How far would publicity go?

Just yesterday at Orchard Rd, I saw some guys in white and green T-shirt standing along the busy street. I had thought they were giving out pamphlets and balloons to passers-by. Then, I saw a lot of people stopping to take things from them. Normal pamphlets would not have attracted so many people, so out of curiousity, I move closer to take a look.

As I have guessed, they were giving out lollypops!

The green and white stripes lollypop had a sticker of the company to inform people who are they from and there is also a removable discount voucher card on the stick. I thought it is much more effective way of attacting people compared to giving out pamphlets.

The only problem with this publicity is that I thought the company had made a mistake with their choice of color. I mean without telling you the company name, who would you think of when I mentioned green and white? Yes, you would have probably thought of Starhub - second largest Telco in Singapore right? My friend had thought that it was from Starhub.

Well you can't really blame her. I mean people would not normally associate Bossini with green and white... I would think of blue when people mentioned Bossini.

Then at Plaza Singapura, we saw this...

It is a real coffin (of course empty) and even has flowers stands beside it. You might asked aloud: "Why is there a coffin at the shopping centre?"

.

.

.

It is a publicity teaser for the movie - Death at a funeral. This is how far would people go to grab some of your attention... It was stated as a british comedy movie and sound funny. I might want to go and watch it.

Waraku Japanese Restaurant: 叙旧 - Part I

We met up at Orchard yesterday to do some window shopping before going to dinner at Waraku. We past by Louis Vitton boutique, a long quene outside. I wonder if every one of them are really buying anything from there. According to my friend, a wallet cost about $800 dollars. I wondered if I have that kind of money, would I spend it like that?I can really buy a lot of things with $800 dollars. . . for example a fridge.

Then we went to Coach to take a look at their wallet. I am thinking to change one, but not sure if I can bear to spend that much on wallet. I saw one white embossed coach logo wallet that I quite like, but it cost $375 dollars. Should I be splurge once for myself? Then I worried that it would get dirty easily. My current buffel leather wallet looked gray and green after half a year, which pains me. My orange coin pouch is becoming a bit dirty too. I will cry out loud if it happens to that $375 coach wallet.

Furthermore, I just heard from one of my friends that there may not be a pay increment at all. Immediately, the news affected my mood again. I should really save up more rainy days. Sad... Is not as if I didnt work hard at all. I worked hard and do my best for every tasks given to me. Some of them can argued that I am not doing important things and most of them are "easy" job, but I didn't purposely chose to do easy work, did I? I did what was given to me isn't it? Just because it is sheltered and less stressful, I should pay the price for stability? Hai~

Anyway, we went for dinner later at Waraku. The selection there is amazing and I really think that their quality is better than Ichiban Boshi.

Seven of us ordered the following food:

Seafood Nabe Hotpot
LH says that the seafood is very fresh and their stock is so rich in flavours...

Hotate Cream Udon
Ms Foong's selection. We had a scare when we saw the noodles, it comes in a basin practically. The portion is huge !!! The Udon is springy and taste wonderfully creamy with the sauce. Luckily she did not finish it, cause it is really fattening.

Judy's Gyoza Cheese Udon
For a moment, we thought we are in the wrong restuarant. It taste more like Korean Kimchi stock than Jap.

My Katsu Curry Don
The katsu was surprizingly thick, about 1.5 cm in diameter. Goodness! Could have been better if the meat was more juicy. I guess my colleague, Isabel would love this. :)

Northie's Teriyaki Don
Unlike most of the teriyaki that we have eaten, this look more authentic and grilled.

For dessert, we have the traditional ocha ice cream served with azuki beans and mochi.

and Ocha Ice Cream Cake
No different from the ice cream...

Girls Night Out - 逛夜店街

Blue Lagoon

Fizzy Navel

Planters' Punch

Chocolate Martini
Don't know whether it is shaken or stired, it tasted like Alcoholic Iced Milo.

Hee Hee.. )

Don't Break My Heart

Nessun Dorma

Pavarotti's last performence at Turin Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony 2006 - Nessun Dorma

Pavarotti - Ave Maria (My Other Favourite Song)

Although I am not a Chirstian, but I love the song as it always calms me down.

The Three Tenors - Nessun Dorma

The world's famous three Tenors singing Pavarotti's signature song. I thought the last part was quite funny. All of them held on to something as if it will help them project their voices. Hee Hee.

The Three Tenors - O Sole Mio

Pavarotti and Spice Girls - Viva Forever
I thought he look shocked/amused when Posh started singing.

Pavarotti and Mariah Carey - Hero

Pavarotti and Liza Minelli - New York New York

Lyrics of Nessun Dorma

"Nessun dorma" is an aira from the final act of Giacomo Puccini 's opera Turandot . Princess Turandot proclaimed that no one in her kingdom shall sleep. They shall all spend the night attempting to find out the name of the unknown prince, Calàf, who has set the challenge that if his name cannot be found out, the cold Princess Turandot will marry him. Calàf sings, indicating his certainty that their efforts to discover his name will be in vain. (Taken from Wiki below)

Il principe ignoto

Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! Tu pure, o Principessa,
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò,
quando la luce splenderà!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
che ti fa mia.

Voci di donne
Il nome suo nessun saprà...
E noi dovrem, ahimè, morir, morir!

Il principe ignoto
Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle!
Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò!
Vincerò! Vincerò!

English translation:

The Prince:

No one shall sleep! ... No one shall sleep!
Even you, O Princess, in your cold room, watch the stars, that tremble with love and with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me, my name no one shall know ...

No! ... No!... On your mouth I will tell it when the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine! ...

The Chorus of women:
No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.

The Prince:
Vanish, O night! Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win!
I will win! I will win!

Thai Food Recipe

1. Grilled Asparagus Bacon Wrap

Not really Thai Food, but the asparagus came from Thai ! I followed Jamie Oliver's recipe for this. Try not to overcook them as asparagus will turn yellow.

2. Braised Seafood Tung Hoon (Glass Noodles)

My favourite dish. I used prawn stock to braise the tung hoon. You almost taste the prawn in every mouthful. Yummy !

3. Fried Petai and Lady Fingers with Samba Chili

I love hot and spicy food. Usually when cooking dishes like this, I will use more chili. Not for the faint hearted.

4. Creamy Thai Green Curry

I brought packet coconut milk to cook this. I think I used a bit too much. Taste too thick. Nevertheless, it is still nice.
