Zou Bisou Bisou

If you have no clue what “Zou Bisou Bisou” meant, you are behind the trend, my friend. :)

It is the hottest song online now, popularised by an American drama TV series set in the 1960s titled Mad Men.

That particular season five episode goes that the main character Don Draper’s new wife had thrown him a surprise party. All of his colleagues and friends were invited.

Just as the rest were worried that Don would be displeased over the surprise party, his wife had the perfect gift to pacify him. Her present for him was a live performance of the song – Zou Bisou Bisou in French.

It wasn’t a difficult task and I don’t think he can stay angry for long in that situation. They were newly wed and she sang the song sultrily. While she made her hubby rather embarrassed, but I think he was quite pleased.

On a separate note, I like her long bob hair. *admire*

Because of that memorable performance in that episode, the song went viral online. The network seems to have predicted the success of this song and it was released as a single on iTunes the next day.

I was hooked on the song as well. Quite catchy and I already can sing the “zou bisou zou bisou” part. Haha.

If you are wondering, the catchy song wasn’t a new song. It was an French oldies sang by a 16 year old Gillian Hills. The video below is the original rendition.

The song title Zou Bisou Bisou meant Oh, Kiss Kiss in English.

And Sophia Loren also sang an English version of the same song titled “Zoo Be Zoo Be Zoo”.

Monti Csárdás

Not sure who the old violinist is, but his interpretation of Monti Csardas was the best I ever heard on YouTube. Every note is full of life and emotions.

The younger violinist is apparently quite famous, a Hungarian by the name of Mága Zoltán. He played really well too.

I really like the sadness at the opening of the song, it almost sound like someone is weeping. It never failed to bring tears in my eyes. I also like how there is a lot of passion, almost celebrative-like towards the later part of the song.

I wondered if it signifies a happy ending to the story…

王菲-只爱陌生人

I didn’t like this song when it was first released. Had felt that it was quite plain. I was however hooked on it when it was remixed to the Jazz version in a concert.

This song essentially highlighted that it is the simple thing in life that people fall in love with – be it a smile, a look, a gesture or anything simple, it does not matter as long as one is there when most needed.

Simple things in life… I always had a craving for simple things in life, nothing too manipulating, nothing too pretentious, frank and upfront. Hence, Jazz vocal never fails to captivate me.

There is a certain technique of course, but the most important thing that came through in the song is the emotion in the vocal.    

Just learnt from an old friend that the writer of the song had wrote another melody for the same chord arrangement. It is more jazzy than the original song. Quite like it.

I agreed with my old friend that the song has a melody that makes you want to walk alone on the street and soaked in surrounding tranquility atmosphere.

My brothers have been listening to the remix of “We no speak Americano” recently. I thought it was quite nice too!

Here is the original version of the song by Renato Carosone. A bit of irony going on here.

The song title “We no speak Americano” is like rejecting America imperialism, but the style of the Song is strongly influenced by them…

Faye Wong - Rilkean Heart

It has been a long time since I was so overwhelmed by a song and it’s lyrics.

An old friend tagged me to this song “Rilkean Heart”. It was performed by Faye Wong, aka Her Royal Highness, Asia’s Queen of Pop at her concert in Shanghai.

No one. No performer can do what she does – singing with minimal interaction with the audiences, stand still with hands on her hips throughout the song. Displayed through body language, she showed that she still own the stage.

Her voice brought back a lot of memories. Rilkean heart was originally a Cocteau Twins song. Faye had filled it with Chinese lyrics in one of her albums. It never occurred to me all these while that it was a covered song. 

I like the English lyrics better. They are very profound and intriguing. “Rilkean” refers to the Austrian Poet Rainer Maria Rilke’s writings, ideologies, history and characteristics.

The thing which makes me love Faye Wong is that she can still inject her own style into a song which already had a strong style of the original singer. She often gives covered song an extra edge.

David Garrett – Csardas Monti

Music speaks a thousand words too.

This piece of music – Csardas is written by Vittorio Monti, an Italian composer. It is the only famous composition by the composer. The tune reminds me of a memorable moment in my life…

Like a brat, I am spoilt rotten… I will never forget your kind gesture. I considered it to be the first birthday present which I had received this year. It is the best gift I had ever received. I am very grateful.

刘家昌教唱千言万语（顿一下）

I hardly got time to watch TV programmes nowadays, however I did catch Liu Jia Chang’s episode on Kang Ki earlier on. (刘家昌上康熙来了)

In it he was asked to name the most mellifluous singing voice that managed to mesmerise him thus far. Surprisingly, he did not name any of his famous students who are all who who’s in the Chinese Pop scene i.e. Fei Yu Qing, Feng Fei Fei or Zhen Ni. Instead, he named Faye Wong. I so agree with his opinion!

Undisputedly, Faye really has a good singing voice.

When mentioned Faye Wong, many would probably highlight the more postmodern style which she mainly adopt nowadays. However, before she started doing all that, she did gone through the traditional style period before.

Strangely, while she executed many songs exceptionally well using traditional singing style, she did not get a lot of attention for it. She received much more fame later for being quirky – the Cranberries’ yodeling and later The Cardigans’ clear and lazing attitudinal straightforward voice.  

Not that yodeling or singing in a clear voice is much easier, you need to be able to sing in the first place before you are able to translate them with ease. I like it how she did not just wholesale-ly copied those styles and stick with it, she added her own signature touch to it and rightfully created an unique mix which she is known for it now.

In that particular episode of 康熙来了, he elaborated why Faye is a talented singer using the example of the song 千言万语. Liu related that when he had recorded the song with Teresa Teng (the original singer of the song), he would had prefer Teresa to pause slightly at the verse 随浮云-掠过 to translate an emotion. Somehow, Teresa did not manage to do it and he did not insist.

Years later, he managed catch Faye singing the song on TV. He had a shock that Faye paused slightly at where he had intended. He exclaimed “ I did not teach her that, how did she know that she need to pause at the part?”. He added that people who can sing would have similar consensus on how to translate emotions in a song and Faye is one of those people.

Not sure which version he was referring to, Faye sang that song in her concert as well. However, the one which I attached above has a much more similar arrangement with Teresa’s version. You all listen if she had indeed paused.

I think it was a very slight pause, nothing too intentional. In any case, I do think Faye’s cover of the song is a very good one. Technical skills apart, there is this additional emotion factor which I think she had done better than Teresa.

Here is Teresa’s version, recorded in 1978 for comparison. It is a classic in its own rights. I do think it is different style of enacting a song. During then, adding too much emotions into a song would not have been a trend.

In any case, Teresa added more emotions in her songs during the later part of her career after her stint in Japan. She was influenced by Enka music.

Another song by Chairlift – Bruises. This should be their most popular song. It was used by Apple as their i-Pod Nano commercial song.

Chairlift – Evident Utensil

Quite evidently, I am very into Chairlift recently as you can tell from my recent postings – it is all about them.

It has been a long time since I got so excited about music again. Their music reminded of my younger days, when I still play the keyboard and how I always thought I could write “songs”. I can’t, but it was quite fun playing music. 

There is no right and no wrong way in making music. It is how you express your thoughts. This is what I gathered from Chairlift – just have fun experimenting with music.

I read somewhere that this song was about having writers’ block. “How hard must I try for you?”

I sometimes find it very hard to start a passage. I could stuck hours on the first few paragraph at times. However once I get pass them, everything will seems to fall into place.

Erm… Due to video effects, it might caused some discomforts. I got headache watching it, but the song is nice.

This is a remix of the song. I like it too, but the guy’s low key backing is missing. I quite like that backing effect.

I would not have survived in such a planet – healthy diet and slimming body images considered as the one and only way of living. Then again, I am an outcast in this current one too…

Meaning of the Song

Like the plot to a lost dystopian sci-fi, the song outlines life on "Planet Health" -- a place where body-image has become a tyrannical philosophy. Here, advice on healthy diet and sexuality has become law and the food pyramid has become a church. Of course non-attendance means eviction from Planet Health.

Planet Health is Mount Olympus sans the fun; a place where David Cameron and Gillian McKeith make out into eternity, never aging, never putting on weight. It's the other side of Radiohead's 'Fitter Happier', where the new caring conservatives have slapped lippy on the pig on antibiotics and called it 'sexy'.
